45th Dolomitenlauf. Guaranteed snow and cross-country fun

For quite a number of years the Dolomiten Classic race in Obertilliach was held over 42/20 km. If there was not enough snow in the Dolomite town of Lienz, the Dolomitenlauf was then held as a free style race on a substitute route in Obertilliach, which is why in the last few years it has become a big international event, one not affected by cancellation. Things are now going one step further this winter!

Some new features are in store for participants in the 45th Dolomitenlauf. A re-designed route section will ensure greater cross-country fun during the Dolomiten Classic race, omitting what were previously the most difficult inclines, essentially making the route easier. This means that even less well-trained cross-country skiers are able to tackle the Dolomiten Classic race over 42 or 20 km.

Even with the guaranteed substitute route for the 45th Dolomitenlauf, this traditional Austrian event is set to start in Lienz on 20th January 2019 on the original route. A few days ago, at the foot of the untamed, romantic Lienz Dolomites, it was agreed that the artificially snow-covered snow slopes be extended for this coming winter and preparations will get underway in December. In the Dolomitenlauf villages there is a great desire for this world-renowned cross-country event to be held on the original route again. Technical facilities to provide sufficient artificial snow cover have been set in place and numerous clubs and organisers are ready to assist in the Dolomitenlauf villages.

This means that the 45th Dolomitenlauf is once again set to become a special cross-country skiing festival, which will make its way from village to village to the destination in Lienz town square. The appealing programme of supporting events will once again include the Romantiklauf and the exciting Dolomitensprint.

    Dolomitenlauf writes cross-country history

In 1979 in Lienz, the ‘Dolomitenlauf’ was the first open cross-country race to be set up as part of the World Loppet series, established in 1978. This created a global association of the biggest open cross-country events, with the aim being to make the sport of cross-country skiing an element to bring people together. These days 120,000 cross-country fans from across the globe head to the start every year. While there were initially 7 founding nations, these days there are 20 nations in the World Loppet series. The Dolomitenlauf can be described as being the birthplace of this organisation of cross-country events, which has in the interim become global.

Sports VIPS following in the tracks of the Dolomitenlauf

In October, three-time cycling world champion Peter Sagan and his BORA team-mates will visit the Dolomite town of Lienz and the cross-country hub in Obertilliach, and will do circuits of the Dolomitenlauf course on mountain bikes.
